Quarter Round Starting Step
(The first step up a staircase
that is typically a little larger to accept the newel post
and/or possibly wrap around a wall)
Starter stair treads can be made in a number
of different designs depending on the overall layout of
your steps. The most common wood starter step is a half
round step and occasionally we get asked to make a quarter
round step.
Quarter Round Starter
Stair Tread:
As you can see by the picture of this birch stair tread,
both ends are rounded to allow the tread to wrap around
the wall. Each corner is cut in the shape of a quarter of
a circle... thus it gets its name as a "quarter"
round starting step.

Here's a general layout:

B = the overall length of the tread from one side
to the other
C = the standardized depth of the tread. This is usually
10 1/4" or 11 1/4" , although often in this case
the tread can be a little deeper than the rest... we will
make whatever you need to fit the box underneath.
Radius: we have templates for a 6"
radius (the most common) or a 12". But the 12"
cuts off the corner almost to nothing, often exposing the
box of the step underneath, so be careful to draw this out
on a paper first and test it on your step to make sure this
is really what you want.
These are the measurements that we need to
make sure we cut a quarter round starter stair tread to
match your existing step... then you can order a wood starting
step wholesale direct from ourselves as the manufacturer!
